I’m helping finish up the little details on PRR 4927 repainted at the IRM. We figured out the back lit number board lettering but don’t have anything but blurry photos of the notes on the sides.
I know there is WATER and FUEL OIL. An F at the front of course. I just can’t make out the font style with what I have.
Anyone out there have a sharp photo they can blow up a detail of that and send it over?

It might help to know which era the displayed 4927 will represent.

IRM 4927 is the actual PRR 4927 built in 1942. It flowed to PC as 4927 then when Amtrak acquired 30 GG1's and numbered them 900-929, PRR/PC 4927 was renumbered PC 4939 as one of 10 PC GG1's that worked Amtrak trains under lease. When ConRail came in, PC 4939 flowed to Amtrak where it became AMTK 4939. [PRR 4935 has the same history but is the one AMTK GG1 that kept the same number throughout its PRR-PC-AMTK career] PC/AMTK 4939 has the highest number of any GG1; PRR's highest was 4938, which became AMTK 929, then 4929.

Here's IRM's page on 4927. It appears they've restored it to Dark Green Locomotive Enamel with 5 stripes and PRR's unique font. Whether the lettering and striping is gold leaf or Dulux I can't tell.

Worst case scenario, the one at the RR Museum of PA is very accessible.

I keep meaning to get up there this fall but so far it hasn't happened.

I don't think the actual decals will work for you, but if you reach out to them with the info about what you're trying to do they might share the artwork with you.

I believe the PRR used “Craw Clarendon” font.

That’s a common misconception. Their lettering does have a few similarities with the Clarendon family of typefaces. But, like most large corporations, PRR had its own proprietary lettering styles. It’s a from of branding. PRR had standard diagrams for painting/lettering almost everything and those referred to standard lettering sets by drawing number.

I’ll look today if I have that particular set drawing but don’t hold your breath….

According to this website Craw Clarendon was not developed until the mid-1950s.

The “water” sample in the photo above appears to have more in common with Railroad Roman than it does with the Clarendon family.

"Craw Clarendon" as the "standard" PRR lettering style seems to have originated as commentary in Al Staufer's 1963 book "Pennsy Power". While Staufer was a pioneer in his prolific railroad publishing ventures, he wasn't always the most careful fact-checker.

I haven't located the source drawing, should be on a computer around here somewhere, but I do have handy the vector artwork traced from the original drawing that matches the images. The vector art can be used to make adhesive stencils or adhesive vinyl lettering. Let me know if you are interested and I can send either a high resolution JPG image as an example or the exact sized layout if you prefer that in PDF, EPS or AI format.
