This is in development. I don’t see it happening out on the main but it is an interesting concept if they can get it past regulatory agencies. Just not sure about any general acceptance on anything other than a private RoW.

Also, it can’t be zero carbon if you have to recharge batteries let alone manufacture the things.

Brings back memories of the electric car that ran out of charge just below the peak of a very highly traveled local bridge on a very hot day in the middle summer and backed up traffic for miles, the mess then cascaded to a number of other vehicles running out of electric charge or fuel while they were stuck unable to move.

You know what would really be brilliant?

If they could just figure out a way to replace those steel wheels with rubber tires, then the vehicle could travel on all the roads. Think of how much more flexible it would be and how many more customers it could serve!

Seriously - the people proposing this have no clue what makes rail transport efficient, and how one maximizes the capacity of a railway line.

They show a bunch of them running as an autonomous train. Which could happen someday. But laying spur tracks to all the fulfillment centers and warehouses. The tracks would have to be owned by the government and funded by the taxpayers. Road-Railers anyone.

Analysis instead of promotional sales pitches, from the engineering field:

These bogies or trucks look like enlarged modern streetcar trucks with battery packs between the wheels. They would be better off building a smaller truck and putting it under a streetcar for testing and validation. There could be some serious cost savings in eliminating the overhead wires and substations on streetcar lines.

About the only thing to preserve here will be the prototype cars, to be included in the exhibit of Failed Ideas at the railroad museum of your choice.

There are so many problems with this idea that I wouldn't even know where to start. Truly, if these "veterans" wanted to do something to help the railroad industry, they could start with replacing railroad decisionmakers with those who actually believe in their industry.

The bigger technological shift I see on the horizon about to hit railroads would be self driving trucks. News this week was talking about some successful fully automated test runs carried out. It's not too hard to think we're 5-10 yrs out from that technology fully maturing. I wonder what that does for the railroads when the labor cost of their competition essentially goes to zero.

I took the original poster's question to be about all of the traditional RR equipment that will suddenly become surplus and headed for scrap if this cockamamie idea were to work.

It's like Amazon's idea to use individual drones to deliver each of its packages. I can't comprehend how it could be practical. But then again, I am old, white, male, obsolete, therefore old fashioned, therefore happily retired, much to the joy and relief of my younger and more progressive replacements...

Remember when we were the young whippersnappers with the impractical ideas that the oldsters were certain were going to drive the organization into the ground? I guess that a lot of organizations have been driven into the ground, but a lot haven't...
