Good response, Hume. I totally agree. I think the real issue is when a museum has many pieces of equipment that it neither has the manpower or funds to restore, but refuses to consider trading or selling. This becomes very frustrating to other groups who have the resources but lack equipment that could represent their area.
Possession is not entirely rational. Many museums will insist until the day some piece of equipment rusts apart that they were the best caretaker for it. The more enlightened approach is trade or sell what is not important or can never be truly cared for. That's not a popular notion with "gotta have it" railfans.
