Post subject:  Pacific Electric Business Class Returns

1299, Pacific Electric's 1929 in-house re manufactured steel business car that was reconfigured from a hand-me-down Portland, Eugene and Eastern-SP Red Electric interurban service trailer has returned to self powered operation at the Southern California Railroad Museum in Perris after about a 65 year hibernation. The car received new motors and a new GE PC101 controller in 1929 that enabled operation all over the system including on the about 60 mile long, 1200V San Bernardino Line making it arguably the most modern car in the fleet except for 30 PCCs acquired in 1940 for suburban service. By 1953, except for union agreements and origin-destination management, PE had become fully integrated into Southern Pacific's Los Angeles basin freight distribution network. Lines not leased to Metropolitan Coach Lines to run out rail passenger service were de-electrified. Then, when needed, 1299 would be hauled behind a diesel or steam locomotive until PE/SP sold it into preservation. (More on this in the video links.) Ryan Keck, SCRM's project manager, reported that it took about a month to test and service the electrical and air equipment and inspect and adjust mechanical equipment before the car was considered safe to energize and operate. What a gem! What a tale!
