The EL had some special clearance features on their EMD SD locomotives: Unusual air horn mounting in front of the right side number boards Low profile fans Low profile inertial filter compartment hatch Low profile truck suspension components As participants at another discussion asked me why these were required, I am sharing that information here. These features were needed due to clearance problems on the DL&W lines in New Jersey, particularly low wire on the electrified lines in hot weather, at Summit Station and some other locations. The strike zone was directly down the centerline of the locomotive. We had a clearance alarm at the Marion Shop to monitor the height of roof fixtures. PC

Good info Preston. I always figured that was the reason. I remember hearing that there was a low spot in the Cleveland area also, is this true? |

They had to raise the frames on the 45's to get those big fuel tanks under there...
