The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has recently announced that their War Department 2-8-0 will be undergoing a conversion from coal to oil burning in partnership with FMW Solutions

Facebook Page For NYMR: https://www.facebook.com/northyorkshiremoorsrailway

This has the usual British armchair reaction, but it is key to point out that locomotives in the UK have undergone oil conversions before and/or have burned oil

Members of the GER P43 Class: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GER_Class_P43

A Gauge The Issue (by Chris Eden Green) on this subject would be a fascinating thing to clear up all the issues that are present

I do send my best wishes for the NYMR & FMW on the success of the project

Principals at North Yorkshire Moors Railway recently discussed the cost savings, labor savings, and operational impacts that lead to the conversion at the above link.

Congrats to FMW on landing another job. Like it or not oil is clearly the fuel of the future for steam and in no time it will be increasingly difficult to find coal fired steam in service.

Progress I guess. Ross Rowland

A British WD 2-8-0. Not to be confused with the U.S. WD 2-8-0 which has also operated there.

Actually it is a 2-10-0 not 2-8-0. There is only 1 surviving WD 2-8-0 repatriated from Sweden to the Keighley & Worthy Valley Rly. where it starred in the film 'Yanks'.
WD 3672 at the North Yorks. Moors Railway was imported from Greece (as was another 2-10-0 and an S160) and is, indeed, currently being converted to burn oil. Whilst the cost and availability of coal is a contributory factor the main reason is to enable the NYMR to run steam during times of high fire risk. Currently diesels are substituted at these times.

Thank you for the correction. I forgot the wheel arrangement until I looked at this forum some time later

There is a strong resemblance between the K&WVR 2-8-0 and the under-restoration Alaska Railroad 557.

Calling people names for caring about preservation seems like a silly thing to do on a preservation site.

Question - is it better to preserve the locomotive - historically correct as a coal burner. Or convert it to oil and continue to operate it?

I think both answers are valid.

Personally, I think a living steam locomotive is better than a dead one - always! But losing out on the locomotives historic operations is notable.

Some of the WD 2-10-0's were designed to burn oil and I believe that the NYMR have obtained copies of the original North British Loco. Co. drawings from which to construct the oil burning equipment.
