https://www.tribunenewsnow.com/articles ... -holbrook/ Quote: The Navajo County Historical Society is thrilled to announce the relocation of the historic APA 800 locomotive to the Historic Navajo County Courthouse in Holbrook. This exciting project is well underway, but additional financial support from the community is crucial to ensure its success. The APA 800, a rare RS36 locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in 1962, is one of only 40 engines of its kind ever produced. Today, fewer than a handful remain, making this locomotive a valuable piece of rail history. The Apache Railway generously donated the APA 800, which is currently painted green but will be restored to its original Aztec silver with red accents. The locomotive measures 57 feet long, 10 feet wide, and 15 feet high. To prepare for the move, the locomotive has been gutted, reducing its weight from 240,000 pounds to 166,000 pounds. The relocation from the rail siding to the courthouse parking lot is planned, with BNSF Railway assisting with the track and ties. While the project is moving forward, the actual transport will incur significant costs. The Navajo County Historical Society, led by President Aaron Colon, is seeking donations to cover these costs. Although the move is set to happen, community support will help ensure it is completed smoothly and successfully. Sponsors for this project include the City of Holbrook, Apache Railway, BNSF, Rhinehart Oil, Aztec Land and Cattle Company, and other local businesses. Their contributions are vital in preserving this significant piece of local history. Donations can be made to the Navajo County Historical Society and sent to the Navajo County Courthouse, at 100 E. Arizona St, Holbrook, Ariz. 86025. Please indicate “train fund” in the memo to ensure the funds are allocated specifically for the locomotive’s relocation. In addition to relocating the RS36, the Navajo County Historical Society is also developing a new model train exhibit. This exhibit will feature detailed replicas of historic trains, providing an educational and engaging experience for visitors of all ages. The model train exhibit aims to further enhance the community’s appreciation of the region’s rich railway heritage. This dual effort not only aims to preserve significant pieces of rail history but also to enrich the cultural heritage of Navajo County. The new exhibits will serve as educational and historical attractions, drawing visitors and fostering a deeper appreciation for the region’s railway legacy. ] It's been confirmed that the loco is a complete shell, with prime mover, generator, compressor, traction motors, and even most of the cab gutted for spares to keep the rest of the Apache fleet running. Great idea. Isn't this one of the locomotives stored at the old sawmill site? Thanks for posting Sandy. |
