A Google search turned up the Yahoo Group linked below, as well as http://groups.msn.com/RenoMONORAILSite

Somehow, I think I'll let the evidence stand on its own, although I can't help but have that darned "Springfield Monorail" musical episode from "The Simpsons" rattling through my head now........ "Monorail!.... Monorail!!! ... MONO-RAIL!!!!!!!!"

They haven't shown the Moonorail since that one episode, I think. I imagine the local government might have forced them to have a bike path on the R.O.W. The operators of the line (only Homer, to the best of my knowledge) not having been trained in the intricacies of running a bike path, panicked and ran - then came back only to face the NIMBY's, who are pro monorail, but anti bike path. The city finally abandoned the monorail, doing what they had learned from their only previous experience getting rid of a public transport system - they paved over the monorail. Bikers who struggle through the overgrown R.O.W. are sometimes greeted by a thump on the head due to falling pieces of asphalt crumbling down from the monorail track (the whole TRAIN was too paved over, and somehow looks more like it were tared and feathered).

In an episode where Bart and Lisa climb into the hills to get a great picture for the Phone book Cover Photo contest, Lisa remarks that you can see everything from there, including the old monorail. A flashbulb later sets the mountain on fire, and a briefly sober Barney Gumbal rescues the two in a helicopter. No, I'm not making this up. :)

They've shown the monorail episode many times here in Portland, OR. No connection to the fact that Matt Groeing (sp?) grew up here.

It is said that many aspects of the Simpson's "Springfield" are based on Portland. It is a running gag on the show that they will never divulge the "real" location of Springfield. There are whole websites devoted to pooling together the "clues" as to where the "real" Springfield is, such as this one:
