Post subject: A NEW park engine...
PostPosted: Fri Jul 16, 1999 8:26 am

Noticed the thread below about park engines, thought this item might interest/alarm some people.
While the trend these days is to take locomotives OUT of parks, the somewhat misguided politicians in the town of Lindsay, Ontario, are putting an almost-operable locomotive INTO a park this spring!
This locomotive, ex-TH&B #40, an 0-6-0, has been stored indoors most of it's life (until last week), and was operable until aquired by the town from Canada's National Museum of Science & Technology a few years back, when the museum thinned out some of it's colection. The plan, as I understand it, was that the town wanted to run a steam tourist railway, but a new Mayor came in shortly after and wanted nothing to do with this, and the locomotive sat in an old factory building until last week, when the building was demolished. Many responsible groups have approached the town to try and obtain the engine, but they are just not interested, and are intent that it is going to be a park display.
Despite best intentions, it will no doubt end up vandalized and strippped of valuable parts as a rusting curiosity to local townsfolk in a town that has absolutley NO connection with the history of this locomotive.
Buy the way, this is one of only two existing Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo steam locomotives. Ironicly the other, 2-8-0 #102, is on display in it's home town of Hamilton, where efforts are underway to start a restoration of the engine!
Mike N.
One of the greatest steam engines in this continent is in a water pumping station in Hamilton - any chance this locomotive can join its sister before it gets vandalized and weathered there as well?
Dave
Unless you are refering to a boiler for pumping water there is no steam engine in Hamilton. Could you be more specific Dave?
I refer to the three story high engine built in the 1840s with variable cam actuated poppet valves, in use until the middle of the 20th century, and now a museum. WOW! It may not pull trains, but what a fine piece of Victorian technology.
Dave
