Thanks to all of you that responded to my question about switchbacks in the East!
Now another subject: spiral loops in the East. Which ones exist(ed)?
I know of the Hiwassee (sp?) Loop on the L&N. Are the loops on the Clinchfield and the Southern (between Asheville and Salisbury) true spiral loops (one track crossing over another by means of tunnel or bridge) or really hairpin curves?

I know of no other true spiral loops on a mainline RR in the east. The so-called Old Fort Loops between Old Fort and Salisbury, NC are simply a succession of hairpin curves. I can't even think of any abandoned loops. This isn;t to say there aren't any.....
