Post subject: Some more fun: slang
PostPosted: Wed Aug 18, 1999 8:37 am

The previous thread about funny nicknames was very interesting and brought some levity to this board. I have a fun question. What slang (printable) do you use or made up while at work? Here's a few that is used at Greenfield Village in Dearborn MI-
Speed Run: Well obviously it is a faster than normal jaunt between stations. It is used when there is a flood of people in the park and the flow of people through the train needs to speed up. I heard that the term speed run has its roots in prohibition. It was a run across the Detroit River to Canada to get some bootleg liquor.
Super Duper: This is the opposite of Speed Run. The train creeps along with the least amount steam to lengthen out the trip on slow days. This confuses the conductor who comments during the ride about what sights can be seen from the train. They end up havening to ad lib to the Nth degree. Keeps them on their toes.
Five O' Clock Run: This is the succesor to the speed run. The park closes at 5 but the train pulls into the main station around 5:15 after picking up stragglers in the park who want their ride. Since the crew is eager to get home this wild ride ends up being the fastest. When the clock strikes five the train blasts out of the station and makes a 30 minute trip into a 10 minute one.
I-696: This is the busiest road in the park. Cars zoom up and down this road which roughly parallels the track before crossing it at grade on an angle. It is dangerous not only because of the density of traffic but the older cars with thin tires tend to get stuck in the flangeways. The folks who visit with their vintage cars learn this the hard way when they visit. Thankfully though some flashers were installed this past summer to protect the crossing. Of course the real I-696 is a busy freeway in the Metro Detroit area.
Post subject: TVRM slang terms...
PostPosted: Thu Aug 19, 1999 11:24 am

Most of the slang that we've used at TVRM is running related or sayings as opposed to general descripitons. Here are a few examples for your perusal.
Drag your feet- slow down.
Lean out and Kiss'em good bye, 'cause here we go- hold on to your hats folks.
The hole- Missionary Ridge tunnel which is a long, narrow bore.
Clear hole- tunnel is unobstructed.
Dark hole- can't see through the tunnel, proceed with caution. It might be perfectly clear weather everywhere else on the line, but you can still get fog in the tunnel if conditions are just right.
Malfunction Junction- Grand Junction Depot, our main passenger station. It always seems that something is going wrong or breaking there.
Rail Disaster Car- anemic rail diesel car that is generally very balky.
Dieseasel- uncouth term for diesel-electric or straight diesel motive power. Most often used in discussions comparing steam to diesel by steam supporters.
