I am requesting information on the train wreck of 1906 in Dover, Oklahoma. It was CRI&P, engine 628 that was in charge of train #12. I would like to know who built it, when, where...
I wrote something on this wreck in a couple of L&RP issues some years ago. Sorry, but my stuff is still packed after moving, so I can't tell you which issue. My oldest CRI&P roster is 1912, but get onto the Rock Island Technical Society website's discussion list and they can help you. I believe the engine is still there. Someone wanted to drag is out of the riverbed in the early 1960s, but was stopped by the RR, who said the concrete pilings for the new bridge built at the site were poured directly onto the engine. There is also purportedly an old Frisco engine in the drink further up the same river, and rumors of at least two other CRI&P 4-4-0s lost elsewhere in Oklahoma floods. RITS URL is storm.simpson.edu/~RITS.
