Out of a pallett full of old A N Norton and Duff Norton car jacks, about 1.5 work. These jacks are the ones with an external ratchet and large internal screw. The common problem is the outside casting turns rather than raises and lowers. The mechanisms are also very stiff.
My gut reaction is that the screws are probably full of grunge, but how to get into them is a mystery - anybody out there have any experience with these things? Should I just go back to track jacks and hydraulics?
Dave
It has been a while - but I seem to remember that the bottom of the jack unscrews to get at the works. There is a lock screw in the side of the body to retain the screwed cover. Ours were really painted over and generally difficult to remove. I do not know if all Duff-Nortons are this construction
