Can anyone update us on the status of the station in Oakland, California? It was damaged in the 1989 earthquake, and was supposed to be torn down, but recent photos show it still standing. Any efforts to save it?
Good question! Don't think it's been demolished yet. I always thought the upper-level interurban platform remnant was interesting from SP's electric operation days. Believe there was a mural inside similar to ones in San Jose or Sacramento depots. Can't recall the theme though.
An old postcard I have of the predecessor 16th St. Oakland depot showed the waters of S.F. Bay lapping at the very ballast of the tracks. Obviously, some landfill was brought in at some point. You'd never know it today.
WP depot in Oakland still stands. You can walk to it from Jack London Square where current Amtrak depot is. Not sure when the Santa Fe Oakland depot was demolished.
