Post subject: | FEBT Rockhill Work Session August 18-19, 2007 |
The eighth FEBT Rockhill work session of 2007 will take place Saturday and Sunday, August 18-19, 2007. We will work from 9 am to 5 pm Saturday and from 9 am to 5 pm Sunday. We'll meet at the Rockhill shops at 9 am. At this point I do not know whether the RTY beanery will be open this weekend. You may wish to bring your own lunch, and there are sandwich shops in town, and probably food vendors at the fair grounds. This Saturday, the 18th, is the railroad's annual Community Appreciation Day. That means there will be extra trains running, including a twilight train at 6:30 p.m. This year, reservations are required for the twilight train and are being accepted by phone (814-447-3011) until 9:30 on the morning of the 18th. The M-3 will be running, and there will be a variety of special tours and vendors. HOPPER 802 Repairs to the second truck will continue. Steve Jacobs will lead this crew. BOXCAR 168 The carpenter crew turns metalworkers this weekend. The first job will be to block the car securely to keep it level during repairs to the side sill and bolster. Then we will measure, mark and cut the patches for the sides and grind and prepare edges for welding. When the patches are ready, we will plane the floor sills. Bring hand-held grinders, wire brushes, and dust masks able to protect against lead residue. Lee Rainey will lead this project. FOUNDRY This crew will be doing window, roof and siding repairs around the gantry area. This crew needs some extra carpenter help this weekend. Jim Bacon will lead this project. MAIN SHOPS Work will continue along the south wall on window repairs, glass preparation, and wall repairs, priming and painting. There is also work to be done on partially restored sashes that have been previously removed. Chris Coleman will lead this job. GARAGE A final new collar tie will be installed and the building rechecked for level and corrected as necessary. The center and intermediate sills will be shimmed up if possible to firm up the entire floor. Supports will be installed under the east threshold. The north and south walls will be retensioned and permanent diagonal bracing installed. The building will be pulled upright and permanent diagonal bracing will be added between the collar ties and studs. On the east wall the header will be reinforced, the door posts sistered, and permanent diagonal bracing installed. Bill Adams will lead this job. BRUSH If we have enough volunteers, the brush crew will work along the Rockhill wye on Saturday. The plan is to chip the rest of the brush cut at the last session and to cut as much more as time allows. A gasoline chain saw would be a great help to this crew, if someone could bring one. Rick Culp will lead this effort. WEATHER The weather at this point is predicted to be about 80 with clouds and sunshine - good working weather! Visit www.accuweather.com and check the RRockhill zip code, 17249, for the latest weather. GROUND RULES To take part you must be 18 and a member of the FEBT (or join the FEBT at the work site.) These are insurance requirements. We are guests of the railroad and need to behave accordingly. Last-minute walk-ons are always welcome at our sessions, but if possible, drop me an email in advance to let me know that you are coming. It helps with the planning. See you there!
