Steam Railroading Institute Chief Mechanical Officer Barney Gramling has decided to pursue a new opportunity with his family's farm as well as to take more time to travel the country with Flagg Coal Company No. 75. As a result, the Steam Railroading Institute will be seeking qualified candidates for the position of Chief Mechanical Officer. Barney's contributions have made a tremendous positive impact on SRI's operations during his tenure here. Under his leadership, extensive firebox work on Pere Marquette 1225 was completed in time for SRI to operate its 2006 North Pole Express excursions as well as to complete an incredibly successful 2007 operating season. Happily, Barney will continue to volunteer at SRI as his travel schedule permits and he will be helping us complete several important special projects. We also look forward to welcoming Barney back when he and his father bring Flagg Coal Company No. 75 to Owosso for the month of August for our summer weekend steam operations. The duties of the CMO position include: managing all aspects of the backshop and the mechanical maintenance, upkeep, and restoration of rolling stock and equipment; maintaining all railroad equipment operating on the general railroad system in compliance with all applicable FRA rules and regulations, as well as completing, maintaining and filing all necessary FRA paperwork. Additionally, the Chief Mechanical Officer will be responsible for developing the full time and volunteer staff by leading, motivating, coaching and delegating to them in a manner that will promote teamwork and improve the results of the organization.
