Post subject:  For Sale: Alco RSD-1
The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum is offering for sale three Alco RSD-1 locomotives. These units are inoperable and have friction bearing trucks. Locomotives can not be shipped on their own wheels. Some small components may be missing. TVRM expect to receive not less than net salvage value for these units. Proposals to dismantle locomotives on site will be considered but contractors must comply with any insurance and safety requirements of the Hamilton County Railroad Authority. The locomotives are stored off site from our museum. Questions, proposals, or requests for inspection should be directed to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, Attention: Alan Maples. You may contact by reply to this posting or PM. TVRM requests that firm proposals be tendered by November 1, 2008.

If I recall, the museum also has 1 or two operating units. Is that correct?
If that is the case, why not part these 3 units out and scrap the carbodies?
I doubt very much if anyone will buy the units whole as the weight will be problem if they cannot move by rail.

In any case, selling parts off these would be more successful in these hard economic times.
What kind of shape is the 539 prime movers in?

TVRM has two operating RSD-1 locomotives and already has a good inventory of spare parts. Some smaller components may be salvaged off the surplus engines before they leave. Most likely they will be cut up on site. I have no information as to the condition of engine blocks or any other components. If someone wants to buy the units and part them out, that's fine; we prefer to leave the parts business to those who are already in the trade.
