Post subject:  Interurban Carbody Available for Donation

The carbody of Mesaba Railway Co. No. 16 is available for donation to a railway museum or historical society. No. 16 was built as a combine in 1914 by the Niles Car & Manufacturing Company to replace first No. 16 that was destroyed in the Virginia, Minnesota carbarn fire in late 1913. It is of all-steel construction, save for wood interior trim, window sash, etc. The car as built had a baggage/express section, a smoking section seating eight passengers and a main non-smoking passenger compartment. The bulkhead between the baggage compartment and smoking section has been removed but the bulkhead between the smoking section and main passenger compartment and the lavatory compartment in the center of the car remains. No. 16 operated on the Mesaba Railway from 1914 until 1927 when the line was abandoned. It was then sold for use as a cabin and was used as such from ca. 1927 until 2009. It is currently located adjacent to a lake about 10 miles north of Virginia, Minnesota.
The carbody is available "as is, where is" for donation to a museum or historical group who is willing to take the carbody and hopefully restore it for either display or operation.
For more information and for photos of the car, please contact Jim Vaitkunas at 952-688-7255, jvaitkunas@msn.com.
