Up for government-liquidation bid are a 1944 ("war baby") center-cab Whitcomb and a Pullman (reported as Savannah & Atlanta 19, ex-SR 19, business car?) in Lake Wales, Florida. As of this typing five days are left to bid, and standing at only $1525.

Dear Rypn members,

I just read this topic about the auction of this old railway equipment. The Whitcomb interests me/us very much because it is a USATC loco which was used during WO2 in Europe (note the bolt remains of European buffers on the bufferbeam) . Since 2 years we are looking for such a loco. In Europe / Holland all 20 locos were scrapped during the sixties. So it is a missing link in rail preservation in our country which shows the machines which helped rebuilding the Dutch railways after WO2. In Italy there are 70 tons examples available but these were not used in Holland and modified in the seventies. We have already a small War Department diesel restored and 2 former 20 tons USACT boxcars. Another rail preservation group (calles SGB) restored recently a Davenport USATC steamswitcher. We work together with this society.

I think we are too late now cause of the auction was on 13th of January, but what happened to the loco after the auction....is it saved or scrapped meanwhile ? Or we hope for ....still available ????

Does anyone know anything about the technical state and if it was still complete further, like diesel engines , cab instruments etc..... Or does anyone have photos or information for us anyway ?

Sincerely,

Hans Altena

Both pieces have probably been sold to a scrapper. The reserve was listed at $10000.00 because a scrapper supposedly offered them far more (unlikely.) The units may still be available from the scrapper or perhaps the museum. Additionally, they would not sell the engine separately from the car.

Both engines are present but inoperable. There are two traction motors (2 others missing) and all TM leads have been cut.

I would like to see the car saved. Perhaps we can work together to save them?

Given the heritage, the Savannah museum might be a good home for the car - perhaps somebody there is already aware of it?
