The Empire State Railway Museum in Phoenicia, New York is in the process of deaccessioning a late 1800's B&M 65' baggage car. The body is badly weathered, the roof is intact but worn, the frame and running gear are intact and the car has been rolled after having the bearings cleaned and re-lubed. I can provide pictures and more details for anyone interested. This is the first posting about this car as the decision to deaccession it was made this weekend.

Hello Mr. LaPierre, may I ask why the car is being deaccessioned at this time? Is this in reflection of the recent happenings with the Catskill Mountain group or simply the car doesn't meet the museum's current mission? There's a chance I'd be very interested in seeing some photos along with a general history of the car if possible.

Mr. Wolk

We have 2 baggage cars, the B&M and a D&H of similar vintage. The likelihood of our ever getting the B&M restored is remote considering the limited number of volunteers and the scope of work we have before us. As we occupy the Phoenicia station of the Ulster & Delaware, and as the U&D had a coal-hauling relationship with the D&H by way of Oneonta, NY, the D&H car has more relevance for us. Additionally, we are crowded with regards to available storage track, and would rather use that limited resource for our other cars and for the 2-8-0 steam loco that is undergoing restoration. The possible loss of use of the track shortly to be vacated by the CMRR is yet another factor. If you are interested, I will find whatever information we have on the car, and can post some pictures.

Thank you for your interest,

Paul LaPierre

I presume this is a wooden car? Open platforms?

No open platforms. I'll take some photos tomorrow and post them on Sunday.

Sorry for the delay in getting pictures posted. I need to find out how to reduce them to the 2mb limit for posting.

Hi,

I have reduced many JPG files that are in the 5-12MB area by using Windows Painf and then using the STRETCH/SKEW funtion to reduce horizontal and vertical by 50% or whatever is needed. Resizing both directions by 50% reduces the total size to about 25% - i.e. 4MB reduces to 1MB in size.

In Microsoft Office Picture Manager, Under "Edit Pictures", you can "Compress Pictures" for various uses under the "Change Picture Size" heading.
