Just bumped a listing on Craigslist for a steam locomotive of all things. The locomotive is at railroad oriented motel in Catawissa PA
I have no interest, found it interesting that you would sell a locomotive on Craigslist!

Davenport-Besler Corp. construction number 2187, built April 1931 for the Dominion Construction Co. as their #2187. Sold at some point to Gulf Pulp & Paper Co. in Clarke City Quebec becoming their #38. 1969 sold to a private individual, and sold again to another private individual in 1985.

Hi,

There do not appear to be any side rods.

The numbers on the cab side seem to be all the same side unlike the rest of the cab which the lines seem to have a vanishing point.

Is this a real deal? I might be seeing things and this is a valid deal.

Also missing many integral parts to the cylinders. Looks like only the cylinder casting is present.

Seems to be missing rods, cylinders, cylinder heads, valve gear, valves.....if it can be unbolted it seems to have been unbolted.

I inspected this locomotive about 17 years ago maybe...... it had more of its parts at that point, the biggest problem was a missing journal brass at the time of memory serves. Perhaps the parts were removed for transport to lighten the load and are stored with the locomotive someplace nearby. Seems that would have been mentioned in the ad though. I think the current price is about 5 times what was being asked back then though.

Isnt asking $110,000 a bit high? I mean they wont even get nearly that amount from a scrapper. This whole thing reminds of that guy who owns BL&E 643 and will only except offer many times the value of the engine.

Hi,

I am glad it was my eyes and that this is a real offer.

As for overvalued equipment, http://www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com/detail.asp?id=1805&n=Baldwin-Narrow-Gauge-Locomotive-40 1.76 million for a narrow gauge 2-8-0 that has not turned a wheel for about 10 years is a bit much.

No, that #40 is the engine that was leased to White Pass and returned early. I believe it is pretty much turn key ready.

I recall seeing an advertisement many, many moons ago (maybe prior to the above mentioned 1969 sale) offering two Gulf Pulp & Paper 0-6-0's for sale. I think the ad might have been in TRAINS Magazine. I think that the other one was number 46 or something like that. Is that locomotive still around too, and if so, where at?

Hi,

GTL 40 was on the White Pass in 2000-2001. (15-16 years since last operated)

The 1472 day operating certificate has expired. (about 10 year maximum)

If on a private railroad and not pulling the public, it might be turn key. For public use, 40 needs to be torn down to get a new 1472 certificate.

This may be a difference in USA and EU operating procedures.

Her sister Gulf Pulp & Paper Co. No. 48 stay in quebec. Clark city was amalgamated into the city of Sept-Îles in 1970. SO the 0-6-0 sister stay into her workplace

Kind of interesting that these two Davenport built locomotives were built for a company in Canada. I would think that there may have been some saddletankers that ended up there, but I wonder if these were the only Davenport steamers with tenders that were built new for a Canadian concern. Anybody know for sure, one way or the other?
