The National Railroad Musem is now accepting applications for the exciting position of Restoration Specialist.

SUMMARY

Conducts restoration work on rolling stock and buildings; maintains structural, aesthetic, and historical integrity of rolling stock and Museum structures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned as required.

Supervises seasonal facilities employees, volunteers, and contractors
Creates and supervises the creation of cases, platforms, and other structures for exhibit display
Participates in committee meetings as required
Develops restoration maintenance schedules for historic/ reproduction rolling stock and buildings
Performs regular inspections on non-operational rolling stock and historic/ reproduction buildings
Performs regular inspections and maintenance on historic/ reproduction Museum infrastructure on the Museum grounds (track, signs, fence, etc.)
Makes recommendations as a member of the operations team
Manages and disposes of hazardous materials (asbestos, lead paint, welding byproducts, oil)
Researches and follows best practices for restoration projects
Performs the duties of locomotive engineer
Secondary trainer for operational locomotive engineering and safe rolling stock operation
Assists the facilities technician with maintenance projects as needed
Assists operations manager with departmental budget development
Assists with set-up for special public and private events

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma; knowledge of diesel engine mechanics; skill at welding; understanding of metals; knowledge of basic carpentry, electrical, glazier, plumbing, torching, brazing, painting; understanding of historic restoration and preservation methods; handling and disposal knowledge for hazardous materials; 1 year minimum experience locomotive operation; 5 years relevant experience.

Ability to lift 50-100 pounds with the assistance of another person.
Frequent standing, walking and sitting; occasional driving.
Must be capable of using hand(s)/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulation and pushing and pulling.
Ability to communicate orally in a clear manner.
Ability to distinguish sounds at various frequencies and volumes.
Ability to distinguish people or objects at varied distances under a variety of light conditions.
Ability to withstand temperature changes in the work environment.
Ability to distinguish shades of color.
Must be able to climb a six-foot ladder.
Ability to operate a lift reaching heights of 20-40ft.
