Post subject:  Wanted: Union No. 29 Caboose Stove Grates

Looking for a little help. I'm restoring a Union Stove Works no. 29 caboose stove, but am missing the grates. The original Union grates were an interesting three-piece affair (outer grate, rocker, and slide grate), and I'd like to procure an original set if possible.

I would also be interested in any literature or other information out there on these stoves, as there isn't much online. Any help is appreciated.

Photo of an original grate set (not mine) attached for reference.

Your grates don't look too bad. I'll bet if you get them sand-blasted, they would clean up enough that you could get a new set cast from them, using them as patterns. Find a small local foundry that does piece work, or try Cattail Foundry in Gordonville, PA. This is just the kind of thing they do, and they are very easy to work with.

Appreciate it, but the firedoor is in good shape. I'll let that one go to someone who really needs it.

Thank you, I'll keep that foundry in mind. I would like to cast a set of spares when I do find a set, and would be willing to go in with someone on a run for anyone who may need some as well. However, as stated, I am completely missing the grates for this stove. The photo is just an example from online.

Were the Estate and Union stoves made by the same company? I have an Estate out in my garage that looks almost identical to the Union and I think has the same set of grates. If they are the same I would be willing to loan them out to have new castings made.

If you need to borrow one to get a casting made I'll send you one. I would just like an extra casting as well.

I'm going to get my set of grates out to Cattail Foundry to be reproduced for them, and we can have an extra set or two made up as well.

Is this still happening?

Yeah, but I haven't had a chance to get my set out to Cattail yet.
