Regarding U-boats: The General Electric U-series came in several ratings; The original was the U-25B, and there were the U-23B, U-28B, U-28C, U-30C, U-33C and U-36C. The digits represented the horsepower ratings in hundreds, the suffix letter indicated whether it was 4-motor or 6-motor. There is at least one U-25B preserved in operating condition. Orange Empire has SP 3100, which will be 50 years old next month, being outshopped by GE the same month the last streetcar lines were abandoned in Los Angeles. Last November, it had a rather unusual assignment for a former Southern Pacific freight unit--helping Thomas the Tank Engine haul a train of heavy North American passenger cars. Here it is at last year's Annual Meeting.

T&P 666 (a Lima 2-10-4, 610 is a sister) would later be called a "devil engine," but I understand her crews called her "Old Chill Tonic," a reference to a cold remedy (666) that was supposedly named for its original prescription number when it was invented by a pharmacist a century ago. CSX 8888 (the locomotive that really ran away and provided the inspiration for the film "Unstoppable") is, as noted, known as "Crazy Eights," and is also known as "Little Runaway." |

Back in the early 1980's, after N&W 611's restoration for excursion service there was a very popular railfan video made about her called "Queen of the Fleet". Since then, many folks involved with the old NS Steam Program still refer to her as "The Queen" If you're interested in more than just foaming, you can help bring her back http://fireup611.org/main/index.php |

Nothing for 31? Not to get too off topic but is the cab of 475 really that bad? |
