A look at this photo (from Northeast Rails) explains my headline: http://spec.lib.vt.edu/imagebase/norfol ... s1385.jpeg Isn't this locomotive still around? And also of interest, what was going on in 1952 to give the N&W the occasion to backdate the engine? |

Heritage to the Tidewater? Somehow not likely; in 1952 the VGN and the N&W were very much in competition. This engine is also lettered for N&W predecessor Virginia & Tennessee (Hey, another V&T!) I did confirm No. 7 as still being around; it's on display near Bluefield, W.Va. http://www.steamlocomotive.com/consolidation/nw7.jpg Looks like it needs a little work: http://www.steamlocomotive.com/consolidation/nw7-2.jpg http://www.steamlocomotive.com/consolid ... w7-old.jpg |

#7 was "tarted up" to celebrate the 100th anniversary of construction beginning on the V&T. 475 wore greasepaint in 1957 & 58 for various celebrations, including the Bristol Va. Centennial & the 75th anniversary of the completion of the Shenandoah Valley RR. Interesting that both survive.... http://www.nwhs.org/archivesdb/detail.php?ID=79059 |

I know N&W 475 was doctored up like this in the 1950's. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=norfolk+and+western+steam+locomotives&qpvt=norfolk+and+western+steam+locomotives&qpvt=norfolk+and+western+steam+locomotives&FORM=IGRE#view=detail&id=368B9E7AC1EE43730EC8150F68A0D91889925D72&selectedIndex=192 There are photos of other M class engines in similar get up. |

Interesting pictures of both N&W 7 & 475 looking like turn older 1860s-1910s steamers. ^_^ |

Does anyone know what plan this engine is based off of? It looks like another engine I know of. |
