Engineer caps are still "in" if you ask me. In fact, I went and put my thoughts down in the following post:

Personally, I think the cap worn by the man at left in my first picture is what a steam engineers cap looks like.... this one complete with the goggles.

The bottom pic of a Katy engineer wearing one of your style caps... but he kept it in shape..probably starched. Hat in top pic evidently had no starch!

Freight conductors wore the dark colored "Kromer" caps... all with the little bow tied on the top that held the ear flaps in place when out of use. They still wore them when I was a young kid.... I even bought one way back then cause I wanted to be a railroad man- stores here in this railroad town carried them.

The railroaders in top photo were actually roundhouse men....

Still available. I have two. Flaps work well in the cold wind.

The bibbed caps really make good work caps as they are very comfortable year 'round. They got it right back then.
