The old Minneapolis & St. Louis main line remains in place between Cedar Lake Jct. in Minneapolis and Bass Lake in St. Louis Park. A good chunk of the 2.2 mile surviving piece of Tootin' Louie track occupies the Kenilworth Corridor between Cedar Lake and Lake Street in Minneapolis.

A heated debate currently rages between Minneapolis and SLP as to whether or not freight rail operations currently being done by the Twin Cities & Western over the corridor will be moved west into SLP proper to make room for the Southwest LRT light rail line from Minneapolis to the southwest Twin City suburbs of SLP, Hopkins, Minnetonka, and Eden Prairie. SLP wants no part of the TC&W re-route, TC&W can't make up its mind as to whether or not they oppose it, and Minneapolis does not want LRT and freight rail to co-exist along the Kenilworth corridor. Opponents often cite a so-called "bottleneck" along the Kenilworth which invalidates co-location.

Here is a photo essay I recently did about this contested piece of right-of-way:

I personally think they should put the LRT in a tunnel from Cedar to Bass Lake and keep the TC&W where it is. They already have an LRT line with a tunnel of about two miles long beneath Lindbergh Terminal at MSP International, so why not one here?

Or just move the bike trail 1 block north to the lightly used street.
