Dumb question, how do they handle the 3rd rail with these excursions, do they turn it off, or does the crew not get off on that side?

Kind of hard to do a inspection / lube with a 3rd rail in the way.

They don't turn off the third rail, its not easy to isolate small sections. Crews just have to be aware of it, and take care, just like they do with OLE when clambering over the tender to move coal. Third rail has been in use in parts of the Uk for a long time, even in the 40s & 50's when steam, was still prevalent. Crews and track workers are well used to working with it.
