Post subject:  Locomotive Front-End Quiz!!!!

Very bored tonight, so decided to stir things up a bit....some people can guess what railroad a loco is from just by the front end....so here's a few photos to identify. Can you guess them all?

Well I'll venture a guess at a few...

A- RF&P 4-6-2 #302
B- ACL 4-8-4 # 1802
H- Southern 4-6-2 #1401
K- WP 4-8-2 # 176

A- RF&P 4-6-2 #302
B- ACL 4-8-4 # 1802
H- Southern 4-6-2 #1401
K- WP 4-8-2 # 176

I concur with N&W J on those locomotives; as to the others I can positively identify:

E- FEC 4-6-2 No. 148, which like SR No. 1401, is still with us.
F- D&H No. 609, which I'm guessing was a 4-6-0 (don't know D&H steam power that well) EDIT: A roster suggests this is a 4-6-2; overall appearance puts the photo before Leonor Loree started adding smoke deflectors and burying the headlight in the smokebox door.
G- Wabash 4-6-2 No. 673, which was probably in blue paint
J- W&LE 2-8-4 No. 6403, which would have become NKP 803 after the merger in 1947 or so.

Those were from memory. I identified one other by looking things up:

D- Milwaukee 4-6-4 No. 6417; this one momentarily stumped me, that outside bearing lead truck made me think it was a Wabash 4-8-2 or 4-8-4, but a photo or two revealed that was all that was in common with the Wabash engines, so it had to be something else, and then the brain cells tickled themselves, and yes, checked a photo, that's it--even the same photo!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:MILW_F6a.jpg

The remaining two currently have me stumped. C looks like a northeastern locomotive from a road like the Lehigh Valley or the Lackawanna, either a 4-6-0 or an early 4-6-2, but the Lehigh didn't have conventional 4-6-0s in that number series, and the Lackawanna had different standards for things like steps that aren't on this engine, although the number series is correct for a Ten Wheeler class on that road.

I'm not at all sure about I, but again, the presence of a 4-wheel lead truck, overall proportions, and the number in a 200 series suggests a 4-6-2 from the Western Maryland or the Virginian Railway. In addition to that, although the 4-6-2s of both roads are best known for carrying their headlights high, there are photos of the engines with the headlights centered, as shown; typically these photos date from the 1930s. The difference comes to details like steps, bell location, and other things. It's also worth remembering that the WM 4-6-2s were modified considerably over the years, with extended smokeboxes and the "rock knocker" plow pilots--but those are details from later on. The steps and the stars suggest a WM K-2 as it looked in the 1930s, and I'm going to guess that's what this is. Of course, sister No. 202 is on display in the park in Hagerstown, Md., with an appearance from 1952.

How good are we doing?

You guys are on-point! All your guesses are correct....

I considered C and I to be tougher ones since they represent an earlier design for the front-end than you would have seen on them as they looked in the last days of steam.

C is a C&EI 4-6-2 on "The Zipper"

I is as you guessed, a WM 4-6-2, during the late 1920's, I believe.

Good job! :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you. . .even if it is just a time waster, this is fun anyway :-)

Any chance we can see the rest of the photos and check out the parts we didn't see? I'll admit to being particularly intrigued by the WM 4-6-2, seen in a configuration we normally don't think of it having, but they did look that way for a while.

J3a-614, here's the WM 4-6-2's you wanted to see....note the 6-chime boiler tube whistles they carried.

You are correct....I really thought #10 would stump people, as photos of Bangor & Aroostook steam are extremely rare.
