I've stopped going on steam photo charters because I pay for the opportunity to experience and photograph steam working in a fashion close to how it was in the steam age. Photo charter operators have gotten so they have steam pouring out of the tender's steam heat line, cylinder cocks open, and any other place steam can blow out.

Steam engines NEVER ran on a freight train with steam blowing out of the tender and NEVER ran down the line with the cylinder cocks open unless there was a major problem.

That's like not going on any tourist railroads after you've ridden one excursion where the train is has fake wood on the tender and they have a train robbery.

Sure, there are photo charters that do that sort of thing, as well as lay down black smoke so thick you could hide the Bismarck. But there are also photo charters that work hard to provide quality experiences for the guests.

It's not like TRAIN has issued a "standard guidelines for photo freights" which suggests cylinder cocks should be open at all times and both injectors should be blowing steam. Different operations have different methods. Simply choose the one that suits you.

I am curious Tom which railway was blowing steam from steam heat lines, as most tourist railroads have removed there steam heat lines if not needed.
