LNER A4 60009 Union of South Africa, in steam, on the main line, where semaphore signals and manually operated x-ing gates are still in use.

Impressive! Sadly, it's likely all that we see--the manual gates, the mechanical signals--are likely to go away, probably before too long.

At the same time, I can't help but wonder if a segment of main line can be kept like this as a tourist attraction, complete with steam power on a fairly regular basis. As usual, location would have to be the key.

This section of line is due to have the x-ing and signalling automated in 2014.
