Can anyone offer advice for what to request in "seating preferences" for tickets on this trip? We are buying "deluxe coach".

Are there any open window spaces on this train?

I'm not familiar with the line to know if one side is more scenic than the other. The TVRM 630 Facebook page posted the following last month so I think the train will be closed up, unfortunately:

Quote:
To answer another common question, the reason Norfolk Southern doesn't allow passengers to open the vestibules on cars during mainline excursions is safety. The inaugural runs in 2011 were the only trips that passengers were allowed to stand in the vestibules. Leaning out the window poses a number of safety hazards. Cinders from 630 fly out in abundance and can get in someone's eyes, many passing sidings are very close to the train, and branches from trees often scrape the train. Standing in the vestibule, even with the window closed, also poses a safety concern. The vestibules of the cars are designed to absorb lots of the impact in the unlikely event of a crash, thus crumpling.

Another Question:

Have these NS trips been keeping to schedule? Can we expect to keep a social call with family after the trip?

Shameless plug: you want car 3......

Timekeeping has been pretty good for the most part. 630 has been providing generally solid performances, schedules are pretty well thought out, NS has kept things moving, and the Central Div./Kentucky Div./CNO&TP folks do a good job keeping things humming along on a fairly busy piece of railroad. Usually "Otto" the "auto router" is given a vacation day and trains are controlled by a real dispatcher instead of the P.O.S. GE computer system -- this cuts down on needless delays and encourages better train movement also.

Of course, "stuff" happens even with the best of efforts.
