The NYS&W's current Utica-based operation runs approx 23 miles to Sangerfield, NY on ex-DL&W Utica-Binghamton trackage. The Susquehanna serves agro-business customers in Sangerfield with an asphalt company (Oneida Asphalt) thrown in the mix as well. Usual operation is one round trip daily M-F. However, rough wintry conditions have disrupted this pattern. By the time Friday, Feb 20th rolled around, it had been several days since the crew went to Sangerfield. It was zero degrees F & winds gusted 10-20 mph. A significant amount of snow covered the tracks and the crew headed towards Sangerfield with 5 covered hoppers, sans snowplow, however. They made it 5 miles before tying the hoppers down on the main & proceeding light to Sangerfield. Here are a few photos depicting this effort: 1) NYS&W GP40 3040 approaching Washington Mills, NY (notice hoppers tied down on main in distance). 2) At the line's summit, Paris Station, NY. 3) Barreling through a snow drift at 15 mph, Paris Station, NY.
