Man, that was a hard coupling! How far did things roll, 10 feet or so? Closing speed had to be well over the 4 mph we're supposed to use.

I'd also like to know more about the circumstances of this video. Why so much laughing? Was this staged or something?

Probably because the European buffer-and-chain couplers don't require anyone to stand between the rails while the cars are in motion. An employee can and should hook the chain together once the buffers have made contact and the vehicles are still.

Presuming that the vehicles stay still, which is not always the case. When switching, it is common for one vehicle to roll back due to the recoil effect produced by the buffers. Thus the man making the coupling has to be quick to hook the chain. This is properly done by holding the end of the chain with a short wooden staff provided for that purpose.
