Since "return to steam" is popular right now, this video popped up on Youtube this month. 750's 1983 return to steam...

Missing in the footage is the accident in which her running gear got royally messed up as a result of a violent slip on a flange lubricator. Broken side rods, bent 3rd axle, and messed up power reverse.

Didn't realize a wheel slip could break so much. How can a bad encounter with a flange lubricator ever be prevented?

Per Jim Wrinn's "Steam's Camelot", the third driver's crank pin on the engineers side came loose as a result of the slip, the loose rod "adjusted" the reverse throwing her into reverse at 35 mph. Broken rods and bent third axle (which though replaced, kind-a plagued her until she went out of service in 1989). They got "new rods" from a FEC sister Ga Northern No. 107.

Is there footage of the slip?

The "slip" on the rail greaser occurred about 5 seconds after I stopped recording. We heard the radio calls for Emergency go out shortly after getting back in car. When it was announced that the "main power transmission system had broken," we knew something serious had happened.

The crank pin didn't come loose, it broke. Guess when we all started performing UT on crank pins and axles? There was about a 20-30% existing crack in this crank pin (you could tell by the rust discoloration). When the crank pin broke, the rod flew up, hit the power reverse and destroyed the power reverse cylinder. 750 has direct Walschaerts valve gear so the locomotive did not throw itself into reverse.

Upon getting stopped, the crew removed the damaged (it was bent) connecting rod at the knuckle pin. The left side rod was removed as well and the engine was towed to Birmingham for repairs and return to service.

Thanks for the details G Mark. Was that Doug that went out on the fireman's running board to check the injector pipe or something around it? Hope he had ear plugs...
