This is a prototype for a modern tram (streetcar) from Russia.

Lots of gizmos and bells and whistles, but I'm afraid it looks pretty ugly to me:

I have to give you credit for the creative (and appropriate) name for thist topic. Let's just leave it at saying she's a bit of an ugly duckling.

Did a little more looking around, and it seems I'm not the only one to say it's Darth Vader's streetcar. Others think it looks like a Jawa sandcrawler, some think it would be appropriate for Batman.

There are some interesting details in the design, including variable lighting, anti-microbial handrails and lamps, individually driven and suspended wheels on stub axles (shades of power trucks by Differential Car Company!), and provision for battery power to run without wires for up to 50 km.

The weirdest thing in its design is that forward leaning operator's compartment. Supposedly it's meant to reduce the potential blind spot right in front of the car, where a pedestrian might walk at a stop. Still, with all that glass and that forward overhang, I would hate to hit anything solid. . .

It does appear to have attracted some attention and enthusiasm, though I have to say I still like the Toronto LRV (now over 30 years old!) better that this author uses for comparison:

It also has come in for a bit of criticism:

I just wonder where they find pieces of obsidian large enough to carve it out of.
