This might be entertaining. I was thinking about the famous 611 - 1218 "race" during the 1987 NRHS Convention. Stateside we all know how exceedingly unlikely it would be to see such a thing again. Meanwhile across the pond this appears to be reasonably common as evidenced on youtube. Here's a good one.

So what has been the best "race"?

Whooee!!! That was fun, though I wonder how many complaints the railway got about smoke!

Among the cool things observed--getting to look into the kitchen of a dining car on the other train; the light in the cab from the fireman opening the door to shovel in coal; how that same light illuminates the smoke inside a tunnel; and at the end, how a steam train coming out of a tunnel is reminiscent of a surfacing whale blowing off (and gives us a blast from the safety valves, too).

All things so familiar to those who know even a little bit about steam.

I still wonder why the enertainment business does so little, does even less right, with railroad material. We can do better than Thomas, I say!

The Pacific 18 201 is a 3 cylinder loco, and you can hear the distinctive 3rd chuff when the camera man is along side of it.

The American versions were done before every passenger had a high def recorder in smartphones. Hm time to change that...
