I present this without comment, as there are plenty of folks here who know her intimately. Sit back and enjoy the commentary.

I watched both segments this morning and found them very educational and in depth in nature. It appears that there is still some riveting of the mud ring to complete but all welding and staybolt work in the firebox appears to be complete and in Ed's words, they will starting the installation of tubes and flues today.

It seems like there was a lot of unforeseen issues to deal with. I mean I would have thought 844 would have been asbestos free years ago.

ALL asbestos material was removed from 844 and it's tender during the spring of 1985 at Omaha Shop.

4014, however, still had asbestos on it when pulled out of the park in Pomona. This was not noticed until it arrived back in Cheyenne and several employees were told to wallow in it while working under the cab because "it couldn't be."

A few phone calls and test proved it was indeed and it had to be abated ASAP.

It turns out the photos he showed and the claims he made were on 4014, not 844.

After ridding himself of 4 others, yes.

Whether he employs two boilermakers or he has hired two boilermakers on a contract basis, it appears that kind of work is getting done.

I like the direction they're going. Needless to say I think they found a lot of issues that they weren't counting on, but that's how this business goes.

Unlike others who want to get wrapped up 'junior high school girl' drama, I couldn't care less if he hired the Prince of Darkness, just as long as stuff starts steaming (in good working order) out of Cheyenne.

Lee, I agree. From what I saw in the videos from Ed's presentation this weekend, regardless of what necessitated all of this firebox work, the work seems to be progressing in a forward direction. If he isn't using qualified pressure vessel welders, that will eventually be brought to light. It's not our game, we're just observors in the stands at this point. Great to see their use of 3D CAD to work up the designs for the tooling they need among other things.

I wish them all the success in the world.

It is my understanding that Part 230 requires qualified welders for work on the unstayed parts of the pressure vessel. There is no such requirement for welding on the stayed portions of the boiler. Common sense tells us that it is not a good idea to allow anyone but an experienced welder to work on these parts of the boiler, but that welder does not have any special certifications. It makes sense, therefore, to hire the right guy with the right qualifications so you have the resource at hand when needed.
