Looking at it again, I think the inspiration for the train itself, the cloud patterns, and a building or two, might be from Dr. Seuss. The automobile at the grade crossing appears to be inspired by the Italian-designed Isetta from the 1950s--but that trailer wouldn't be large enough for anything but a medium sized dog!

They had a project with little zoetrope images in the New York City subway decades ago; I think put in in 1980. It was fun to look out and see them, even though I think the folks that put them in graduated and stopped maintaining the project long ago.

Another movie with more than a fair number of rail scenes is the animated "Zootopia." What's most interesting is the variety of rail types shown--an intercity streamliner with a dome car, a subway, a freight service, and even a trolley car apparently inspired by the PCC type.
