I checked on the SPCRR website and found that the "hayburners" have been "put out to pasture". That probably leaves the Main Street Railway at Disneyland as the only place where "one horsepower" rail operations may be seen and ridden in California.

It became increasingly difficult to maintain horse powered trains as we became the only draft horse operation in the Bay Area... There were few vetranarians, few shoers, and few feed stores with supplies for draft horses.... and only a few possible volunteers who could handle the big horses.

Service is now offered using a 5 ton Plymouth with couple of other locomotives on hand.

I don't agree with the choice, but can't complain as I have moved on to a different museum

Thanks for the followup. I live near the Santa Anita Park racetrack in Arcadia CA. For several years they moved the starting gate with a team of Budweiser Clydesdales. Never mind the Thoroughbreds--the most exciting part of some races was the sight and sound of six BIG horses getting the gate off the track while the race horses were on the back stretch. But this practice ended quite a few years ago, and now the crew uses two tractors to move the gate.
