On Feb 7th, I had the opportunity to chase a MA&N run from Utica-Boonville-Port Leyden, NY. The tracks were once part of the NY Central's St Lawrence Division, which was severed in the early 1960's in Lyons Falls, NY. The branch is 45 miles long, with the only two customers located in Boonville, 35 miles north of Utica. The 10 miles from Boonville-Lyons Falls rarely sees a train except when covered hoppers are stored there.

On Feb 7th, the crew delivered a covered hopper to Bailey's Mill in Boonville. A MOW crew followed the train northward, making sure each crossing was free of snow & ice. The Utica-Boonville section might only see one train per week.

North of Boonville, it was even tougher work as quite a bit of snow accumulated on that part of the line due to very infrequent activity. This section was being cleared to allow eventual placement for storage of a few hundred empty covered hoppers.

On Feb 8th, the railroad brought its Jordan spreader up to Lyons Falls. Upon arrival, it plowed the ROW southward to Boonville.

Here is a collection of photos from my chase which I made into a video:

Also, here are three pics:

1. MA&N 2453 leads its short train northwards over the Mohawk River, Utica, NY.

2. 2453 shows its ALCO heritage heading through Remsen.

3. Spotting the covered hopper, Bailey's Mill, Boonville.

Here are a few photos from the MA&N's next-day run (Feb 8th) when the Jordan spreader was taken Utica-Lyons Falls (45 miles) to clear the line south from Lyons Falls to Boonville (10 miles):

1. Leaving the Utica yard.

2. Passing through Remsen.

3. Making the snow fly, Boonville.

On March 17th, the MA&N took 31 tank cars out of Utica for storage north of Boonville in Port Leyden, NY, approx 42 miles north of Utica.

Here is a link to the video I took in Remsen as the train passed through that small northern NY community: https://youtu.be/lq-5CZ37HZc

Additionally, here are 3 pictures of the move:

1. Depart Utica, 10:10 am.

2. Nearing Dean Rd, Boonville, 11:32 am.

3. A bit closer.
