As I recall the NH New Canaan Branch accident was a head-on collision on single track operated under manual block signal rules. One train exceeded its authority and entered a block to which an opposing train had authority and they collided. In the last 10 years there was a similar close call. In this case, single track was controlled by automatic block signals and interlocked turnouts. There were neither cab signals nor ATS. Again a train exceeded its authority and passed a stop-signal and ran through a turnout onto the single track. Here, though, the opposing engineer saw an anomalous signal, stopped her train and contacted the dispatcher who was able to reduce the collision to a bump. The agency installed cab signals and PTC on all its single track lines as soon as they could get the money and the hardware. Phil Mulligan |
