Post subject:  Municipal and State RV Camping close to Railroads

With Covid again on the increase, and increasing numbers of people using Recreational Vehicles to travel, here are some very nice places you can camp with an RV and watch traffic on the railroad:

Port Arlington, Oregon:
Municipal campground on a peninsula in the Columbia River, Union Pacific and BNSF, plus cruise ships entering harbor.

Farewell Bend State Park, Huntington, Oregon:
Nice scenery with the Union Pacific on the other side of the river. The line from Huntington all the way to Meacham can be very easily railfanned with a medium size RV, there are many good pull-off areas on the old US30 road where an RV can safely park. Many places in this area where you can cold camp while watching trains.

Carmela RV Park, Glens Ferry, Idaho:
Nice park across the street from a winery, with a view of traffic on the Union Pacific.

Municipal Fairground, Missouri Valley, Iowa:
Located west of town near the interstate, the fairground is on the north side of the Union Pacific (ex-C&NW) main line. Many good spaces, the closest one just a hundred feet from the railroad if you like the noise.

You can find places like this using the Allstays website, searching municipal and state campgrounds. Many are "honor system", first cash customer gets the space, while others are on Reserve America.
