Post subject:  US / UK / German steam design

I was just going down a wikipedia rabbit hole on German steam locomotives and I realized how familiar but also strange they look compared to US and UK steam power.

It seems like there are a couple things that stand out about German steam power.

There often seems to be quite a bit more piping visible around the boilers (especially compared to UK steam).

Tenders are designed quite differently (especially on the class 52s).

And then there's the paint practices: black uppers and red lowers.

Is anyone here enough of an expert on German steam to explain how it evolved the way it did compared to other countries?
