Rare circa-1954 photo, before enthusiasts traveled down regularly to see the last of steam:

Bob -

It almosts looks as if the 3036 has a color band running down her tender under the NdeM initials. Don't think I have ever seen this before. Can anyone confirm and if true, advise what color it was? Must have been the same as on the passenger cars.

Sure thing, Les ---At the time this photo was taken, the Niagaras had dark green cylinder and boiler jacketing, cabs, and tender wrappers, as well as gold lettering and orange stripes to match the passenger trains of the time. Mucho Bueno Sabor.

Wow! That must have been something to see! Are there any existing COLOR photos of them in this garb? Are any of the ones on display so decorated? And finally, is number 3036 still with us?

Thanks for the information Sammy.

I've never seen a color picture of a Niagara with the orange stripe, but there must be one somewhere. I've seen color slides of a simplified version of this paint scheme with green jacketing, but with freight style lettering, and no stripe. The centerspread of Harold Edmundson's Mainline Mexico book is a B&W time exposure of two Niagaras painted like that, sizzling away side by side on the departure tracks at Valle de Mexico. None of the surviving Niagaras are painted in this scheme, either, but that's a Hell of an idea.

When I saw 3036 in November 1966, she was in the black and silver freight scheme, but carried a custom made shield shaped number plate rather then the original rectangle. Today she's displayed at Leon, Guanajuato with an NdeM caboose and a narrow gauge ten wheeler from the San Rafael & Atlixco. Mucho Bueno Sabor.

Thanks for the info. Extremely informative, as usual. Don't know if we can get one of the surviving Niagra's in Mexico painted and lettered in this scheme, but perhaps the 3028, IF it ever gets restored, could be done up that way.

Yes they did. I think most, if not all of them, were the ex-Lake Erie and Western mikes that the NKP inherited when they took over the LE&W in 1922.
