Well, considering the recent successful roll calls on various diesels, and taking into consideration Robert John Davis's recent report on another thread about the poor prospects for saving the two Cambria & Indiana hoppers at the K&K auction, I thought I would try to start a roll call on existing two bay (only) open top hopper cars. I'll even try to post a photo. What else is out there?

There's a nice offset-side B&O at North Conway; is the Railroad or the 470 group the owner of that one?

These things were as common as dirt 30 years ago, and I'd bet there aren't more than 25 "in captivity", in the whole country.

Nice cars, those CB&Qs, but ballast cars don't count in this tally. Gotta have those two cross-wise pockets to be a true twin-hopper.

Just like any RS-3 with an EMD engine ("DeWitt Geep") is NOT an RS-3 any more-- no 244, no RS-3.

True hopper or not, Orange Empire has and uses a Union Pacific ballast hopper that dates from the 1920s. UP #85727 was built by Pullman-Standard back in 1926. It's 82 years old and still moving and spreading ballast.

It got a good paint job about 20 years ago and now it looks like a working car. Wish I had a photo I could link.

Just a heads up, the topic of discussion between the company that bought C&I 162 (the HM at Marienville) and another group was having it preserved. It sounds like, if proper terms can be arranged, that the prospects of saving that particular C&I car are very good. I don't believe there's much hope for the car at Kane, though that's an opinion rooted in what others told me about that particular car's bidder. Time will tell...

I know the scrapper that bought 162; he is aware of the car's significance and is willing to work with someone to save it. The company to which he's speaking about preservation has saved things in the past. 162 is in pretty darn good shape; if you're talking about a candidate for static display, you couldn't get a much more viable one.

I had worked, prior to the auction, to find a home for her somewhere here in Cambria County but really hit nothing but dead ends. The local Historical Society just didn't have any money.

The Whitewater Valley Railroad has NKP 64370 which meets your criteria. It is used on occasion to move ballast, but it isn't set up as a ballast car. It's generally in good shape, save for a few bent up grab irons.

Midland Railway at Baldwin City KS has two ex-US Navy hopper cars, numbers USN 6103101 and USN 6103102. They also have one of those ballast hoppers, GN 78105.
Abilene & Smoky Valley at Abilene KS has ex-RI 95225, which is a two-bay hopper, albeit fitted with a removable steel roof to convert it to a grain hopper.
The Railway Museum of Oklahoma at Enid has a very old ex-SLSF twin bay hopper, design approximately 1910 with arch-bar trucks, platforms at each end and a stem-winder brake staff. I have researched and been unable to determine the original number for this car.

The Reading CompanyTechnical & Historical Society owns two former Reading two bays.

There are also three privately owned former Lehigh Valley two bay hoppers in Temple, PA.

That would be five, I thought there were three all together in that group, two RDG and one LV.

Rob, if you are still trying to keep a count, there are two ex-USN cars at Midland Railway in Baldwin City KS, not just one.
I recall there were several ex N&W hopper cars in the "Lost Engines of Roanoke" group. Were any saved?
I have been told that an ex-WAB "panel side" two-bay hopper was recovered from a defunct coal mine at Arma KS and is now on display at the local historical society in Pittsburg KS. Can anyone confirm?
