The operating season is over, and the shops are humming. Coaches are being painted, the LO&S doodlebug is being re-motored, #89 is receiving firebox sheet replacement (I helped put those sheets in. Boy, do I feel old.), and Thomas and #31 are receiving their annual inspections. In addition...

Image
#8618 is out of the shop sporting our variation of her original New York Central scheme.

Image
The new tender for the Colorado Railroad Museum’s #346 is complete. The frame duplicates the original’s oak and douglas fir construction, while the tank is built completely of 304 stainless steel, welded together. All of the seams and patches of the original tender tank have been duplicated, along with over 2700 cosmetic rivet heads spot welded on. All of the old tender’s trim and hardware has been salvaged and reused on the new tender.

Image
Repair work is proceeding on the boiler of Long Island #39. Here the old, thin firebox roof sheet is being lifted off the boiler.

Image
This is a top view of the firebox with the roof sheet removed. The backhead braces and the auxiliary dry pipe are visible above the crown sheet.

Image
The side view shows the backhead braces over the top portion of the inside side sheet, and the lower portion of the outside side sheet.

Image
This photo shows an isolated area of pitting on an inside side sheet, possibly the result of laminations in the steel in that area. A random portion of the crown sheet is also pitted in this way Elsewhere, the remaining firebox sheets are in good condition.

Thanks for the update, Kelly. I am a steam guy, but I have say that switcher looks sharp! Can't wait to see the #39's boiler when you guys are done with it and the 346's tender looks fantastic. As usual, Strasburg's expertise is superb. God bless. Seth

Kelly,

Thank you so much for the update!

The 8618 looks amazing in her new paint. Looks like the NYC was kept in mind when the lettering was done.

The Progress on the bolier is also looking great! I look forward to the 2009 opearting season.

Keep up the great work!

Anthony

Wonderful news and progress at the best loco shop inthe east. I too, hope you get to use what you've learned from #39 on #1361. I do hope the G5s gets fully restored by Strasburg.

Thanks, Kelly, for these progress photos, and for "setting the pace" in repair/restoration. 8618 looks GREAT!

As to LIRR 39, this seems to be the only "un-facelifted" PRR-designed engine of its era with good prospects for operation... As such, may she come to be seen as the living example of PRR's "finest" (classic) power and toward that end, I (an unrepentant NYC partisan) wish you and your team every success in your important work!!

I am from Long Island and sure am glad to see the work going on with the #39.

After spending a long time in a park she was also taken apart too long ago.

The work will show that it is possible to restore a Pensylvania Railroad boiler.

Allow me to interject that a second LIRR G5s, #35, remains in the custody of the Oyster Bay Rail Road Museum, and is slated for operation once more. At this time, #35 is not on the back burner while the museum continues to build up their infrastructure.
