Does any one have any experence with POR-15
Rust preventing primer and paint systems? Is
it as good as they claim? Any suggestions for
finishing rusty iron and steel when sandblast
grit would damage gears and bearings.
Instead of blasting with sand you could use crushed walnut shells. It is more expensive, but it won't to the damage to bears the way sand will. You could even blast with baking soda.
Two methods are in common use today. Both are benign to machinery. First is pelletized C02 or dry ice. The C02 is pelletized in a machine and then used as the blasting media. The obvious benifit to this is that when the dry ice once again goes into its gaseaous state it dissapears. Also the dry ice blast does not ruin the metal surface or remove the black oxide benificial coating.
Second method to look at would be high pressure water blast. Hydro cleaning uses pressures up to 60,000 psi however 10,000 would scale the rust from the parent metal with no problem. If you can stand the water on the machinery then this is a good method. I had a locomotive boiler exterior scaled in this manner. Also the boiler interior with the pelletized dry ice. Both methods are good in that pits are not formed in the metal from sand and the black oxide coating is undisturbed.
