21st Century Steam Excursion Train Trip Scheduled for Knoxville to Chattanooga

NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Want to experience the thrill of riding behind a steam locomotive?

Here's your chance, as the 21st Century Steam program of Norfolk Southern (NYSE:NSC - News) and the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum will operate a one-way trip from Knoxville to Chattanooga, with return by charter bus, on Monday, Nov. 14.

The train will be pulled by former-Southern Railway steam locomotive 630, which is a Consolidation-type locomotive built in 1904 at the Richmond, Va., works of American Locomotive Company. Number 630 pulled freight trains during the first half of the last century, and in modern times has traveled extensively in excursion service throughout the Southeast. Small of size but big in character, this locomotive recently underwent an extensive ten-year rehabilitation at TVRM's Soule Shops complex in Chattanooga.

Ticket information and other details for the Nov. 14 excursion train are available through TVRM's website at http://www.tvrail.com or by calling 423-894-8028. The train will depart 9:30 a.m. from the historic former-Southern Railway passenger station at West Depot Avenue and Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Ticket cost is $65, which includes the train ride, bus return to Knoxville, and a box lunch. More information about the 21st Century Steam program is available at http://www.21stcenturysteam.com.

Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum was founded in 1961 in Chattanooga to create an interpretive operating museum of historic equipment and artifacts in an authentic setting. Today it operates an extensive schedule of historic and scenic trains in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia, supported by its East Chattanooga locomotive and car shop complex. TVRM is the largest operating historical excursion railroad in the Southeast.

Norfolk Southern Corporation is one of the nation's premier transportation companies. Its Norfolk Southern Railway subsidiary operates approximately 20,000 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia, serves every major container port in the eastern United States, and provides efficient connections to other rail carriers. Norfolk Southern operates the most extensive intermodal network in the East and is a major transporter of coal and industrial products.

21st Century Steam is a collaborative effort between Norfolk Southern and TVRM to operate steam-powered excursions throughout the territory Norfolk Southern serves.

With all the negative things going on in the world it is a wonderful thing to see two {or more} professionally run operations working together. My only regret is that I live way to far to even think about going for a train ride. I don't even care about train rides much, but for the money it sure seems like a nice way to spend the day. Beautiful country over there too. Saw this loco while visiting the shops back about 7-8 years ago. $65, in a heart beat.

To me what makes this event so cool is that here is a class 1 railroad working with a class one organization and producing a wonderful product. Ok that may not be big news in these realms, no secrets in the universe. Similar to some other organizations who have it together and work out some nice working agreements/arrangements with other organizations/business. For all the "foaming" about what can't be done, and will never be done again" we have some modern day movers and shakers demonstrating how it can be done! I personally thank God for the people in this world who know how to make things happen. Get so impatient with those who insist on producing little or nothing then explaining why it has to happen this way. Hope others see this as inspiration as to what can be achieved, even if not in such large ways, just plain achievement.

So sorry for the rant, but these movers and shakers in the rail business give me hope.

Cheers, John.

Great news!, wait, 10 days? Epic. What happened? This is the return trip from the Lexington Group right? Was this the plan all along and couldn't get it finalized/legal/aproved till now, or what?
Oh well, would love to go, but too far away. Next year perhaps.

There is going to be a Knoxville to Asheville roundtrip on Nov. 12th - I am assuming it is a diesel trip.

Great to see this engine running through beautiful scenery! Nice video, but... Check out the rough joint made when they back onto the train! Sloppy, literally, as water slops out of the auxilary tender.

I can't argue with the comments about the coupling, but I can assure you that the train handing was pretty damn good otherwise. I also noticed some comment on the Youtube video about reaching 50 MPH. Judging from the speedometer on the West Virginia, we ranged from 38 to 42, unless we were on a slow order, which I would think is well within the margain of error for a 40 MPH limit.

Nice job by the NS personel staffing the train and kudos to the TVRM Mechanical Department for their dedication and late night efforts to make sure 630 made the trip.

Looking at that video, I love how the 630 sounds like a fighter jet while it's going by the camera. That's different that the expected!

Good to see the railfan community supporting the trip. It's certainly a good value, and it appears it will sell out rather quickly considering te date the tickets went on sale. Just curious, how many tickets were available to begin with?
