The recent discussion of a proposed WW I Military Railway Service reenactment group reminded me that I had seen parts of this film, made in France some 18 years before John Frankenhiemer's classic, "The Train." Like the later film from 1964, the subject matter is the French resistance to the Germans in WW II. It is perhaps even grittier than the later movie, which was also shot on location with a minimum of "special effects," at least in terms of models and the like, and covers other aspects of the resistance and French rail operation absent in the later movie.

The opening section is from two sources on YouTube to get as much as I could find of the complete film, but as a result of this there is a bit of overlap:

Of parallel interest is this clip, which is listed at its source site as "1944 Russian Partisans Derail a Train Full of Tanks," but which in reality looks like a color version of the huge staged derailment in "La Bataille du Rail."

Enjoy. . .and also remember. . .

Remember also that the movie "The Train" was based on a true story, and that much of which is portrayed in that movie actually happened. The Frence resistance kept delaying the art train by various ruses, and once it got out of Paris, they kept it running around until they got it trapped between a train that they derailed in front of it, and then they derailed the following train. At that point, the allies were too close, and the Nazis abandoned the train.
